Meet Megan
Meet Megan—an educator with over 20 years of experience serving children and families in underserved communities. Her journey began as a first-grade teacher in Chicago Public Schools, where she developed a deep commitment to equity in education. Today, she mentors student and alternative licensure teachers at a Chicago university. Megan’s dedication to educational equity is personal.
As a dyslexic learner, she knows the challenges students face when reading feels out of reach—and the life-changing difference a well-trained teacher can make. This perspective drives her to ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed, no matter their circumstances.
Megan coaches teachers in schools where 99% of students come from minority or low income backgrounds, and often, fewer than 10% are reading proficiently. Despite these challenges, Megan’s dedication never wavers. As she shared with heartfelt determination, “We cannot let these kids fall through the cracks.” “We cannot let these kids fall through the cracks.”
In her search for better ways to support her teachers and their students, Megan found the Slant System. With support from Classmates Literacy Foundation, Megan enrolled in Slant's year-long Advanced Training and Practicum, gaining evidence-based strategies to better support both teachers and students. She shares:
"Even with a master’s degree in education and 20 years of classroom experience, I was never taught the evidence-based methods I’m now learning through my Slant training. Like most teachers, this knowledge was not part of my training. Because of this, I frequently see families of children who learn differently struggling to address unfinished learning, often without the time, resources, or expertise to help their kids develop critical foundational skills.”
Over the past year, Megan has been an invaluable partner to CLF, connecting us with schools and teachers in her network and ensuring our support reaches the educators who need it most
